Installation of electronic ignition in Briggs and Stratton small engines is very easy.

Please read Briggs and Stratton's instruction sheet; click for page 1 and page 2.

The instruction sheet makes it all seem more complicated than I found it to be. Here is how I've done the conversion:

1) Remove the shroud covering the flywheel.

2) Note how the governor air vane and linkages are connected, and how the ignition coil is attached.

3) Remove the ignition coil and air vane if equipped.

4) Cut the wire going to the points and condenser as close to the points as possible without removing the flywheel. Do not remove the points and condenser - simply abandon them in place.

5) Strip the end of this wire. In addition to the usual plastic or rubber covering, this wire will likely have a varnish covering as well. Strip the end of this wire to bright copper for 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.

6) Install the Magnetron module on the ignition coil as shown in the instruction sheet.

7) Take the wire you stripped in step 5 and place it under the spring terminal in the module. Also place any wire leading to a kill switch under this terminal.

8) Take the ground wire for the module and the ground wire for the ignition coil and twist them together for a couple turns.

9) Install the ignition coil with it's new hardware and air vane the same way it was when you started. Make certain that the modified coil does not interfere with the air vane or other moving parts. I set the air gap between the flywheel and coil with a few thicknesses of paper. I've also used a business card. I'm sure either way is not an approved way to set the air gap, but it works for me!

10) Re-install the shroud covering the flywheel.

11) Test as shown in the instructions.

12) On your first test startup, have a screwdriver handy to short out the spark plug in the event that your engine's kill switch isn't working properly.

Enjoy not having to worry about your engine's points and condenser any more!
